Music

“LaFave is nothing if not a red–dirt romantic. Viewing the world from an open road and an open heart, with one eye on the girl and the other on the mythological lure of the highway. First it was Woody Guthrie and then Jack Kerouac, now it’s LaFave and his brand of dirty–boots folk–rock... Jimmy has the most expressive voice this side of Belfast... it’s the music of Jimmy LaFave that really defines this part of the land.”

“Even in his own passing at the age of 61, LaFave’s voice provided comfort, wisdom, and healing to a hurting world. Peace Town rings loudest in its vulnerability - fellow Okie Leon Russell’s ‘Help Me Through the Day,’ David Ball’s ‘When the Thought of You Catches Up With Me,’ and the Band’s ‘It Makes No Difference’ - but also through defiant and playful hopefulness with Bob McDill’s ‘I May Be Used (But I Ain’t Used Up)’ and Chuck Berry’s rumbling ‘The Promised Land.’ Butch Hancock’s ‘Already Gone’ and Tim Easton’s ‘Goodbye Amsterdam’ play to both ends of the spectrum in closing each disc. Goodbyes rarely sound so alive.”

“Jimmy LaFave makes melancholy sound like jubilation. Great songs, all of them. His specialty remains ballads that speak the plainitive truth cushioned by simple yet crisp instrumentation. “LaFave sounds like a dark night gone good. And on Dylan’s “Emotionally Yours” he proves plainly that music and spirit are two things he well understands.”
VH–1
“On “Texoma,” LaFave mixes nine of his own fine songs with several covers, including an oddly wonderful version of the old flower child anthem “San Francisco.” LaFave finds a bluesy groove on “Bad, Bad Girl” and ”Poor Man’s Dream,” and gets downright exuberant on “This Glorious Day,” with help from the fabulous Burns Sisters on vocals. LaFave’s red dirt rock just gets better with age, and he pours his heart and soul into the ballads. “Texoma” captures this musical treasure at his best.”

The raspy warm voice wrapping around his (he wrote or co–wrote 13 of the 15) well written songs, with real solid playing has become a trademark of this artist, in fact if it weren’t so that would be the surprise. I don’t want to say it is more of what we come to expect from him, but you better understand I say that as a compliment. This is by far his best song writing effort, and with the progress he has shown from album to album I can’t wait for the next batch of songs. His ballads tear into your heart and mind with their tone nuance, yet they are not soppy, but real life that most can feel because we have worn those boots also. Take a journey into the moods and thoughts of “Into Your Life.” Remember that day when you did/had the same experience, and all the emotions that went with that day. Go right into the infectious “Ramblin Sky” and see if you know “why my feet are tappin’,” look down at yours and see what they are doing. Listen to the wondering that goes on “Long Ago with Miles Between,” can you tell me those same thoughts haven’t run through your mind, in one form or another. It’s not only his songs that he puts it all into, but I happen to think he does some fantastic work on Bob Dylan’s songs. His musical tone reflects the thoughts and mood tone almost perfectly, so that each builds on the other.”

“This is the third of singer/songwriter Jimmy LaFave’s albums, and each one reveals new dimensions. The songs are socially conscious and idealistic without being the least bit melancholy. His voice has that rasp that comes from living near the edge, and is one of his best assets. He can take a ballad and make you feel its pain and sadness; listen to “I’m Thinking of You,” and “Never Be Mine.” Then listen to the tenderness, joy, and love in “Going Home,” andthe gentleness and caring now in his voice reinforcing the lyrics. Then there are the times he just puts his foot down and rocks out in the Western rhythm that so effectively drives the work of contemporaries like Joe Ely, plus the one who started the West Texas sound, Buddy Holly; take a listen to “That I Can’t Control.” His band is only getting tighter and tighter, staying with him at all times, but never hidden behind him; he allows them to step out and show their chops in ways that effectively highlight the songs.”
— Bob Gottlieb, All Music Guide
“...allows LaFave to wring more emotion from a ballad than perhaps anyone ever has. When he rocks, he does so with complete abandon. When he chronicles love, it’s with complete immersion. There is no pretense in him.”
— Martin Fullington, Music Reviews Quarterly

His plaintive voice embraces his lyrics with the feelings of his heart. His singing and song writing (he wrote all the songs except “Early Summer Rain”) evoke the wide open sky of Texas, with the great spaces between people as evident as the stars in the wide–open sky. His tight band keeps the sound moving behind him. He deftly varies the rhythms and song styles so that the album never lets you fall into that “Highway Trance” which he sings of. His lyrics are sharp on the variety of subjects he addresses. Maybe a notch below Austin Skyline, but its a small step down, and a big step forward.”
— Bob Gottlieb, All Music Guide
“Highway Trance puts Jimmy LaFave in the first rank of roots rockers to emerge from Austin, Texas. His songwriting shows equal passion for road–house rock and romantic balladry, and his Night Tribe band is a killer.”
— Don McLeese, Rolling Stone

“The more I listen to Jimmy LaFave’s music, the more I think the recognition he has received doesn’t come close to being commensurate with his talent. Two releases of vintage material—both arriving shortly after the terrific new The Night Tribe—provide the latest evidence that he is one of the best folk/rock singer/songwriters this side of the Andromeda Galaxy.”

“The man’s voice is a remarkable instrument, but he is as much of a songwriter as he is a singer and these packages reaffirm that he can pen material worthy of sharing a program with that of the masters he covers.”

Hidden Track: Rosie written by Jackson Browne, Donald Miller © Jackson Browne, Swallow Turn Music
Recorded live in Mark Shumate’s Living Room

Containing 31 previously unreleased tracks, this two–CD set highlights the past two decades of LaFave’s growth both as a songwriter and as a prime interpreter of Dylan material. Here he tackles no less than a dozen of Dylan’s classics, ranging from the opening “Positively 4th Street” to “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” to the quiet stillness of “If Not for You.” Equally as satisfying are LaFave’s own originals, with “Red Dirt Roads at Night,” “Burden to Bear,” “How It Must Remain,” “Ellie’s Song,” “Loved You Like Rainbows” and “The Open Road” all being particularly compelling statements. The sound, taken from live performances and radio broadcasts from Texas and around the world, is rough and right, giving this an official bootleg kind of feel that fits the music nicely.”
— Cub Koda, All Music Guide
Background Texture (1).jpg
“He could pull the purest, truest sounds out of singers, musicians, and songwriters; he knew just what the songs needed to make them reflect the musical identity of the artists.”
— Henry Carrigan, No Depression
